how many students have smartphones?
Michael Hanley, a Ball State journalism professor who conducted the study in 2010, said
of those phone-owning students,
- 49 percent now have smartphones, compared with
- 38 percent last October and
- 27 percent in February 2009.
“They have become the early adopters of mobile technology,” he said. “This is very positive, smart phones are having more educational uses. More benefits are showing up for students.”
http://testkitchen.colorado.edu/projects/reports/smartphone/smartphone-survey/ – report on the uses / effects of smartphones etc on students learning behaviour. Interesting and depressing? Suggests increased use of smartphones but little depth of concentration – don’t put too much info / facts after the 3rd paragraph.
Whilst I do support the educational use of phones in the classroom, my own observations whilst supply teaching suggest that any student with a phone [off task] will get reduced [1 or 2] grades at GCSE, thanks to facebook and texting.

Youngsters will always be interested in new and emerging technologies. I am not suprised in the growth of smartphone ownership. I think that they are a great tool not a fashion statement.
