Geocaching
Geocaching is a popular International activity which involves searching for caches hidden in various parts of the country, using free software on modern smartphones / ipads and iphones. Geocaching is an outdoor activity which involves getting out and about [generally walking] and a ‘treasure-hunt’ aspect [using the brain and searching with eyes and hands] and the ICT usage of phones / GPS and the Internet.
The activity is popular with PE staff, but there are aspects of Geocaching which appeal to Geography and History [depending on where the cache is], and there are aspects of Geocaching which interest Maths / surveying / geometry teachers.
Caches are generally small boxes hidden at the destination – some of them have items to collect, swap or re-cache elsewhere.
I can run a day’s activity which would start first with a classroom introduction to the subject and its use of phones/GPS. Then we would go out and have a go at finding some caches – put knowledge to the test.
