Funding allowed two large groups of yr8 students [mixed ability] spent 5 days each, finally creating a horror video and starting a story/novel, which was then turned into an eBook. I was involved in supporting the video editing and then producing the eBook. Contact me if you want to be sent the eBook – Epub or Kindle?

What makes a literacy project?

Some are aimed at the pupils who have trouble reading – one girl I spoke to admitted her reading weakness, was having ‘reading support’, but didn’t seem bothered about her condition. Several students had a lack of confidence in all subjects -”I’m no good at anything’ – not just reading. Several boys were identified by the girls as big problems in the classroom, but were in fact working hard on film editing, no trouble at all. Our literacy project was involving the students in preparing scripts and creating films which they were proud to show; students would probably not have identified it as a literacy project.

I offer ‘literacy projects‘ in:

film/ video making
blogging
geocaching
making an eBook
photography

Themes can include the Local Community – opportunities, entertainment, opinions, local characters, redevelopment, history, culture, faith

They all involve applied ICT skills, are practical and produce a product which can be exhibited, involve teamwork and communication skills, and often get them out of the classroom into the community.

I have been helping on a yr 8 Literacy project in Treorchi South Wales. After scripting and filming a story about Vampires, we have been editing the shots in the ICT suite. Some are working alone and others in pairs, using Windows Movie Maker. Each group had 3 days allocated to the project.

Ireland – 2 days in Dublin

March 2012 – spent two days in a school in Dublin, assisting Dragonfly’s Steve Chapman in presenting AfL [assessment for Learning] and Improving Classroom performance [Active Learning] courses to 40 Principals/Deputies from other Dublin Schools. These were practical courses – as all D’Fly courses are.

New Course – Geocaching

Geocaching is an activity attracting International participation – it’s like a hi-tech treasure-hunt. You use GPS equipped phones [thats most modern phones and many tablets] to find buried caches. The activity gets your students fit [teachers too], involves brains and problem solving, teamwork, and often visits place of Geographical / Historical importance. Maths teachers find surveying applications relevant.

Like Kuwait, another whiteboard course. Most rooms have smartboards but the IT manager had audited their use, and like most schools, staff are not using the IWB’s enough – time for training.

I prefer to show them a few techniques and then give them time to have a go, but the software wasn’t installed [yet] on their desktops.

Had a very pleasant day’s training at the NES. Took 3 groups of 25 in 11/2 hr slots. Teachers of all abilities and subjects.

Small world – The DH taught where I grew up, an IT teacher had been on one of my courses in Leeds some years ago, and somebody recognised one of my photos – he lives nearby in Chepstow.

It ain’t arf hot there – but the A/C was fine.

Nice school.
